TEMPORAL LOBE -  2016

sound instalattion

My body is the cosmos.

I reverberate whatever pulses within me.

Heart, veins, arteries — in an unceasing expansion.

They echo.

The installation invites one to enter the universe of the temporal lobe — the part of the brain responsible for processing auditory stimuli and managing memory. A dark space. Small blue points of light. Nine sound monitors of varying intensity, size, and format.

These sources play frequencies that arise from the internal movement of the human body. From different heights, the sounds travel across the sound sources, exploring the low, mid, and high levels of the space. Sounds from my own body are spatialized between moments of frenzy and silence. Heart, veins, arteries echo as the soundscape of an organic listening experience within this immersive space, where one is invited to simply allow oneself to listen.

Exploring perception from the standpoint that the entire body listens — the experience of physical reverberation (sound as matter) of these internal frequencies within the body, and the return to sounds akin to our earliest sonic stimuli — are central themes of this research.

The expansion of sound frequencies — which constantly shift due to the expansion of the universe — may reflect who we are. Sound = the transfer of information through matter. Matter is in constant transformation, just as we are, for we are also matter. The core of this investigation is to listen to oneself, to know oneself, first and foremost, through the sounds our own body emits.

Because we are part of an unceasing transformation, the exercise of listening to and discovering oneself is ongoing.
